Frequently asked questions
What are the Velites All Terrain grips?
The Velites All Terrain are fingerless hand grips designed to be used without chalk and to deliver consistent performance on both clean bars and bars with chalk build‑up.
Their purpose is to **remove dependence on the environment** and allow the athlete to train or compete with a stable feel. With a thickness of 2.1 mm, they provide a more tactile, controlled sensation.
They are aimed at intermediate and advanced athletes seeking versatility, especially in variable conditions and on ring work.
Primary Use
Bars with or without chalk (without applying chalk to the grip).
Secondary Use (Where it excels)
Rings, especially wooden ones: ring muscle-ups, ring swings, and transitions where you want a quick release without excessive "hooking."
Limitations + Safety
Do not apply chalk to the grip (even if it tolerates chalked bars).
DO NOT use for pullovers due to the specific grip level without chalk.
**Which movements are they specifically good for?**
Any gymnastics where grip consistency and accumulated friction tend to break your sets:
**Pull-ups**, **Chest-to-bar pull-ups**
**Toes-to-bar**
**Bar muscle-ups**
Also **Rings** (swings, transitions) when you want to release without aggressive hooking.
What is the difference between All Terrain and Quad Ultra?
The main difference lies in intended use and thickness. The Quad Ultra prioritizes maximum protection and grip on clean bars with a thickness of 2.9 mm, making it ideal for beginners.
The All Terrain grip, at 2.1 mm, offers a more tactile feel and better tolerance on bars with chalk. It is designed for **athletes who train in variable conditions** and value consistency and control over maximum protection.
**Quick Comparison (All Terrain vs Ultra)**
**Quad Ultra:** more protection (2.9 mm) + maximum grip on clean bars (ideal for beginners).
**Quad All Terrain:** enhanced tactile feel (2.1 mm) + better tolerance for chalked bars + excellent on rings.
Do they need chalk?
No. Velites All Terrain grips are designed to be used without chalk and applying chalk directly to the grip is not recommended.
Their material provides **stable performance even when the bar has chalk residue** from other athletes. This feature allows training in shared boxes or competing without preparing the surface.
Using them without chalk helps preserve their properties and ensures a consistent grip experience for longer.
Do they work if the bar has chalk?
Yes — this is one of the scenarios where the All Terrain grips excel. They are designed to perform consistently on bars with chalk build‑up, common in group training and competitions.
Unlike more specialized models, they do not lose effectiveness when the surface isn’t clean. This gives the athlete peace of mind, allowing focus on performance without constantly adapting to the bar condition or changing equipment.
Key Points
Chalk-free hand grips for any bar (whether the bar has chalk or not).
2.1 mm thickness: enhanced tactile feel, less bulk in the hand.
Great choice for intermediate/advanced athletes and competitors.
Pack includes wristbands + carrying bag.
Important Warning: Do not use for pullovers.
Are they better for rings?
They often perform especially well on rings, particularly wooden rings, because they control friction without being aggressively sticky. This facilitates quick releases and cleaner transitions in movements like **muscle‑ups or swings**.
The more tactile feel helps maintain control without sacrificing safety. For this reason, many athletes who frequently train on rings prefer this model over thicker or more adhesive options.
Can I use them for pullovers?
Use for pullovers is not recommended for safety reasons. The level of grip they provide, combined with that type of movement, can increase the risk of uncontrolled situations. For this specific exercise it is preferable to use other protection systems or avoid grips.
Following usage recommendations helps prevent injuries and ensures a safer, more consistent training experience over time.
How do you wash them?
It is recommended to **machine wash for ten‑fifteen minutes with cold water** and always inside the included bag. This method helps remove dirt and residue without damaging the material. After washing, air dry and avoid tumble dryers or direct heat sources.
Proper care preserves the material properties, extends the life of the grips and ensures they continue to deliver consistent performance session after session.
Which size should I choose if I'm unsure?
If you are between two sizes, we recommend choosing the larger size. If unsure between M and L, opt for L; if between L and XL, choose XL. Size M is only advised for clearly small hands according to the size guide.
Choosing a slightly larger size usually provides greater comfort and stability during use, especially in long training sessions or competitions where proper fit makes a difference.
**A well-chosen size should achieve four things:**
**Covers the actual friction zone:** Main friction typically occurs at the top of the palm (near the base of the fingers). If this area is exposed, you will get friction burns quickly.
**Does not rotate when hanging:** If it rotates, folds appear → folds = hot spots.
**Stays flat (wrinkle-free) under load:** A grip with wrinkles or folds concentrates friction in one spot.
**If in doubt, size up:**
Between M and L → **L**
Between L and XL → **XL**
Choose **M** only if your hands are clearly small and the size guide confirms it.
**Why:** With fingerless grips, choosing a size too small is usually worse than going slightly larger. A size that is too short leaves skin exposed in the friction zone and causes rotation. A larger size, when properly placed, is usually stable.
How to use Quad All Terrain daily (Chalk-free) - Fit and Placement
**Tight Velcro to prevent rotation:** rotation = folds = hot spots.
**Keep the grip flat**, without wrinkles, covering the actual friction area.
**Bar Management**
You can use them on clean bars or bars with chalk buildup, but it is still good practice to choose the most consistent bar possible for PRs or long sets.
**On Rings**
If you feel other models get stuck, All Terrain usually makes releasing easier due to its feel and thickness.
**Maintenance**
Air out in the bag after training (hang outside the backpack).
Quick wash with cold water and air dry when needed (no harsh detergents).
Velites Quad All Terrain vs Quad Pro / Quad Carbon
The core concept is different: All Terrain is **chalk-free**, while Pro/Carbon are **chalk-based** (they perform best when used with chalk).
**All Terrain (Chalk-free): stable friction without relying on chalk**
Ideal if you want to train without "managing chalk" constantly.
Designed for performance on real-world box bars, where conditions vary.
**Quad Pro / Quad Carbon (Chalk-based): protection + "classic" control**
The focus is on protection and a "traditional" feel where chalk is part of the system.
Usually recommended when:
You always train with chalk.
You work on very aggressive/knurled bars or environments where chalk is everywhere.
You prefer a "classic" grip experience where the grip comes from your hand + chalk rather than the material itself.
**Important Practical Difference:**
With **All Terrain**, you do not want to "cake" chalk onto the grip.
With **Pro/Carbon**, chalk is part of normal use to achieve the intended grip and protection.
Velites Quad All Terrain vs. Quad Competition
The Quad Competition comes into play when the primary factor is **regulations** rather than just grip.
**All Terrain: Chalk-free performance for "variable environments"**
Ideal when you don't know the bar's condition, but the competition/training allows grips with enhanced traction.
**Quad Competition: Designed to meet changing regulations**
Conceptually similar to Pro/Carbon in terms of protection, but with a key design detail: **no hem** (and a construction designed to avoid features that some rulebooks interpret as "unfair grip assistance").
**Recommended when:**
You compete in events that may restrict grips with materials or finishes that artificially increase traction.
You want to eliminate the risk of being told "you can't use those grips" on competition day.
Your priority is **"legality + protection"** over "maximum grip."
**Quick Summary:**
If the question is: **"Will they let me use them?"** → Quad Competition.
If the question is: **"I don't know what the bar will be like"** (and grip is allowed) → All Terrain.
**Safety Note (for all high-grip, chalk-free models)****Both Quad Ultra and Quad All Terrain:** DO NOT use for pullovers. There is a risk that the grip may be so strong that your hand will not rotate or release as needed for this specific movement.
